Sound Design

Sound designers create all kinds of audio, ranging from those signature “audio logos” like the iconic CNN sounder to complicated live theater performances with music, sound effects, ambient noise and spoken word. Sound designers must keep their mind on the big picture; how and where will that sound will be used, what do you want the listener to do, or what emotion do you want to convey, as well as the practical production chores of simply creating or recording the pieces necessary to create the assets.

I have experience with just about every facet of the audio world. Music recording, live sound, boom operation, commercial location recording, dialog “looping” and editing, and foley post-production. I have worked for the National Theater Conservatory, the Fringe Festival, Smuin Ballet, Oakland Ballet, various clubs, industrial events, and more radio stations than possible to list.

This was created using some 20 different music sources, but all of the pieces came from the world of gospel music, or music with a spiritual sentiment. Created for choreographer Dwight Rhoden’s ballet “Glory Fugue.” It was produced for the Oakland Ballet and had its first performance October 11, 2002.

This news theme was something I put together for a radio program called "New America Now" that ran for 10 years on KALW FM in San Francisco. This short news "sounder" signaled the segment for headlines from the ethnic media. It consists of about 8 different sources - everything from actual newscasts in non-english languages to music cut down from a 15 minute piece. These 'signature' audio designs are very labor intensive, but are a great way to create an audio logo for your company or a regular segment in your radio program.
